Founded in 1874, DSG is one of the oldest girls’ schools in the country and is situated in spacious grounds in Grahamstown. The school has links with St Andrew’s Preparatory School where the girls attend classes with the boys in the Pre- Primary School and the Junior Primary section.
The school offers an exceptionally wide choice of subject. The DSG is committed to high academic standards and has a proud record of achievement.
Small classes, generously resourced departments and outstanding facilities provide an academic framework tailored for personal attention.
All girls are required to take part in sport which is seen as an integral part of the school programme. Swimming, tennis, athletics, squash and hockey are popular activities and pupils may also elect to participate in horse riding.
Part of the school’s success is the House Tutor system where each girl is put in the care of a tutor who is with her for her entire school career. The group meets weekly and the girl’s academic, social and emotional development will be closely monitored.
The DSG, in collaboration with St Andrew’s College, is one of only four South African schools privileged to offer Old Girls the opportunity to apply for the prestigious Rhodes scholarship on an annual basis, giving them the opportunity to proceed to Oxford University for post- graduate studies.
